Areas of Support
The 5 Ws of Fledgling Literacy

Who: Struggling Learners
Individuals with learning differences of all ages deserve a chance to thrive!

Fledgling Literacy is there for individuals who need extra support in foundational literacy (reading and writing) and executive function (daily life) skills.

These learners may be neurodivergent and have brain based differences (such as ADHD, autism, or dyslexia), they may have an IEP or other support services, or they may not have a diagnosis and feel like they are not at the same place as their peers or constantly trying to keep up. They may feel discouraged, exhausted or like they "just aren't smart enough".
Fledgling Literacy commits to being a safe environment for them to explore knowledge in a way that makes sense to them, a space where their unique strengths and interests will be celebrated so they can build confidence, hope and a brighter future.

What: Literacy & Life Skills
More than basic tutoring, it's investing in the learner's future!

Fledgling Literacy is there for students who need extra support in foundational literacy (reading and writing) and executive function (life skills).
One-to-one, specialised support allows each learner the opportunity to learn at a pace that supports them. At Fledgling Literacy, this is provided through the instructional guidance of a certified teacher using curriculum based on evidence and research (such as UFLI and SRSD)and tailored specifically to celebrate each learner's strengths and interests.

Where: Online and in Kawartha Lakes
Online

My sessions are primarily offered online. This provides families flexibility and accessibility at a reduced cost. It also provides the learner the opportunity to learn in a safe, familiar setting - especially after long days outside of the home. An extra benefit to this is that they will also be building digital literacy skills!
To facilitate safe and interactive online learning, at no extra cost to you, I use Lessonspace. This program runs directly on your web browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari.)

To learn about the differences between generic "Screen Time" and intentional use of technology, read this excellent article from the LD Society of Vancouver.

In-Person

For learners in and around the Kawartha Lakes region (Bobcaygeon, Buckhorn, Dunsford, Fenelon, Kinmount, Lindsay), I can provide in-person sessions at the Bobcaygeon Library. For more information on how this impacts fees and scheduling, please reach out.

When: Afternoons and Evenings
Fledgling Literacy holds hours from Monday - Thursday from 1:00 PM to 8:30 PM.
Literacy & Life Skills Sessions happen on the same day of the week at the same time of day each week. They are pre-booked in session packages (see our Services Page for more information). Homework Support Sessions may be booked ahead up to 48 hours before.

After school slots fill up quickly, so please view the Booking Calendar below to confirm availability.

Why: Literacy Empowers
“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”
The same is true with addressing challenges in learning and daily living. It is best to act as soon as you identify a learner is struggling, but the next time to act is now. If you have any questions, please reach out.
